Every mountain in Ireland over 600 metres, linked together in a single continuous project. 21 days later, all 275 were done. Not by heroics — by showing up, again and again.

Every mountain in Ireland over 600 metres, linked together in a single continuous project. 21 days later, all 275 were done. Not by heroics — by showing up, again and again.

In August 2024, Killarney native Sean Clifford set a new record by summiting all 275 of Ireland’s mountains over 600 m (the Vandeleur-Lynams) in just 21 days, 2 hours and 47 minutes — more than halving the previous record of 47 days.

He covered 929 km and gained 72,000 m of elevation (roughly the equivalent of climbing Everest from base camp 20 times), starting on Maumonght in Galway on 7 August and finishing on the Towmies in Kerry on 28 August.

The unplanned challenge began after he was dared to run every mountain in Galway; he then continued through Mayo, Sligo, Donegal and the rest of the country. He battled relentless wet and windy weather, swollen ankles, a ripped quad, near-hypothermia, sleep deprivation and even chest-deep bog in a Mourne Mountains storm — all while wearing the same pair of socks for the entire 21 days.

What It Took

  • Logistical planning across the length and breadth of Ireland
  • Daily route revisions dictated by weather and river levels
  • Recovery protocols compressed into hours between summits
  • A support team willing to drive, feed, and re-boot at any hour

Key Lessons

  • Consistency compounds — every day forward is progress
  • Conditions are neutral; the story you tell about them is not
  • Community makes the impossible feasible
